Why Catholic Parenting?

“Every child is unique; no two are alike! Always remember, they are all God's children, and we are their stewards,” said Dr John Hui to a room packed with over 20 parents.

The physician and father of four and grandfather to five, led the Catholic Parenting workshop held on 6 and 13 April at St Joseph Church (Bukit Timah).

The intimate gathering of parents during the workshop allowed for candid discussions that delved deeper into the essence of Catholic parenting.

Dr. John elaborated on the tripartite roles of parents as Priest, Prophet, and King, illustrating how each role can be exercised effectively within the family dynamic.

Priest: Lead the family in right worship of God through our thoughts, our words, and actions, bringing them into the light of the church.

Prophet: To proclaim who God is to the family.

King: To build God's kingdom within the family through the power of love.

In order to fulfil these roles, Dr. John explained the essential principles necessary to establish the mission of Catholic Parenting. He underpinned three pillars Church, Marriage, and Children, that were rooted in these foundations.

These pillars center around Christ himself, who embodies the way, the truth, and life. As such, he said that it was essential to embrace Christ as our foundation.

“It is important to build on our marriage as when we become better lover, we will become a better parent to our children,” Dr. John emphasized.

He shared that it is important for children to know that no matter what happens, they are unconditionally loved and will always be cherished for who they are. This assurance fosters a deeper sense of security in their identity, leading to increased confidence.

Catholic Parenting aims to offer guidance on establishing the foundation that serves as the cornerstone of our mission in Jesus Christ, along with the pillars that uphold our mission.
