Parents get worried when their children or teenagers are stressed and anxious. Some symptoms to look out for include frequent complaints about having stomach aches or headaches. Some may lose appetite or have problems sleeping. Other symptoms include being withdrawn or irritated easily.
Raymond, a father in his 40s who attended the 17 Feb talk, “Helping Your Children Cope with Stress and Anxiety” on Zoom said, “Early detection is important.”
More than 60 parents listened to Dr Tan E-Ching, a Senior Family Physician and Therapist, as she shared strategies to enable parents to help children cope with stress and anxiety. According to Dr Tan, “The most important thing that parents can do when children are stressed and anxious is to listen to them. Acknowledge their feelings, be non-judgemental and do not criticise. Fixing the problem for the child is not going to help the him or her.”
Many parents found the mindfulness techniques for kids to build mental resilience and tips for active listening useful. Joanna, a mother of teenagers said, “The examples that the speaker shared enabled me to learn how to relate to my teenagers better.” Similarly, Davina, a mother who attended the talk, also found the communication techniques are key takeaways for her.
All who attended received a post-talk resource summary that encapsulated the key points from the talk, including the additional resources mentioned by the speaker.
