Golden Years

New Perspectives

Ageing is a process that we all cannot avoid. Yet, many are not prepared and for some, it can be rather daunting.

Making Your Golden Years Turn Golden, a workshop launched recently and organised for Church of the Holy Spirit from 18 November – 9 December 2022. More than 40 participants, including those nearing retirement or have retired, attended the workshop.

The workshop was developed and conducted by John Ooi, who had researched significantly on the topic and included his own experience as he transited into this new and different stage of life. During the workshop, participants learnt the following:

  • The psychological challenges that come with retirement and old age
  • The different perspectives that one can adopt so that the years ahead can be lived with enthusiasm
  • Dealing with issues such as loneliness, loss of purpose and poor relationships
  • Preparing adequately for the coming years and for the infirmities of the Fourth Age.

Overall, response to the workshop had been positive. Many found the sessions insightful, especially the small group discussions.

Below are some feedback from some of the participants:

The sharings from others about constant prayer and not to fear was an encouragement for me during the workshop.

Josephine Anthony, retiree in her 70s

The trainer is very

resourceful and patient.

Joyce Chong, retiree in the 60s

The key takeaways for me are the different phases of retirement and how we can use God’s gifts to give back to society.

Catherine Yam, a semi-retiree in her 60s

I realised from the workshop that I need to also prepare my heart and soul to eventually face Our Maker.

Adam Ong, 80-year-old retiree
