Valuable Takeaways from
Raising Emotionally Resilient Children
As parents, we all want our children to be happy, healthy, and resilient. But amidst the rising statistics of mental health issues in youth, what can we as parents do about it?
In a bid to answer this, Catholic Family Life (CFL) recently organised an online talk titled “Raising Emotionally Resilient Children”. The talk conducted by Dr Tan E-Ching, a physician of 20 years and a mother of three, shared expert tips to the more than 70 parent attendees. The tips centred on the need for parents to play the pivotal role in influencing the emotional development of children in their day-to-day lives. Below are some of the tips that were shared in the talk.
Parents need to monitor their emotions and be aware of how their feelings incluence their moods and actions. Having this awareness enables self-regulation and better management in emotions. This in return results in an outward expression that is appropriate to your surroundings.
“Wow! Looks like we parents have to learn to practise this ourselves, (before)
practising this on the kids,”
summed up Tan Jian Sheng, a parent who attended the online talk. Indeed, many parents who attended the talk agreed that practising self-awareness and mindfulness would eventually rub off on their children as they often mirror the actions of their parents.
Another skill shared by Dr Tan is mirroring which helps parents to listen actively to their children, validating their emotions without judgement. This skill requires practice, but it provides an empathetic and safe space for a child to open up, allowing parents to connect with them in a non-judgemental way.
Dr Tan shared other tips in the talk, along with other resources on the topic. CFL has planned for more parenting talks lined up in the next few months.
