Are you ready for Lent?

First Sunday of Lent, 18 February 2024
In the liturgical calendar of our Church, we know that Lent is a time of preparation for the coming of our Lord. But how ready are you to be prepared?
Some of us see great meaning in Lent, as a time where we truly reflect interiorly, pray evermore fervently and reach out to those that need help. Yet, let's face it, for many, Lent goes by without notice. We may start strong but as soon as we stumble, we throw in the towel.
So, what if we fall?
It's okay to have missteps along the way, the greatest saints have failed spectacularly! Look at King David, St Peter, St Paul; their constant desire to continue to seek God, despite their failings, is what makes them exemplary.
This Sunday's readings speak of God's desire to enter into covenant with us. As baptised Christians, we are part of this covenant. We are His and no mark of sin can erase God’s desire for that. As the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert, so too are we invited to journey closer with Him during this Lenten season. There will be times that we are tempted and could fall, but know that regardless of our failings, we need to – and logically should – hold firm to Christ, ie., reflect him in his obedience to his heavenly Father. Know that just as the angels were there, ministering to the Lord in the desert, they are with us as we move forward on this journey.
