In today’s Gospel, Jesus highlights to us the importance of knowing the purpose for the traditions we carry out in our lives. Some traditions are deeply ingrained in us that we may fail to see the meaning or symbolism behind the tradition. Though always set out to be a good intention, Jesus warns against following traditions merely out of habit, which can lead to ritualism or legalism, similar to the Pharisees, who criticized others for not adhering to traditions. This can happen in families too, where adherence to traditions might overshadow the core commandment of loving one another.

The family is “where we learn to live with others despite our differences and to belong to one another“ (Pope Francis). The heart of the family should reflect the heart of God and this includes the different rules, traditions and practices our homes follow. Family traditions bring meaning to our celebrations, foster special bonds as well as preserve something important to the family such as values of commitment and respect. The root and purpose of such traditions should always be Love. Ultimately, this passage urges us to ensure that the heart of our traditions is aligned with God's heart, focused on love, and not merely on external observance. True defilement, according to Jesus, comes not from external practices but from what resides within our hearts.

Therefore, we need to cultivate a heart that aligns with God’s own by reflecting on the true purpose of the traditions we maintain. Are these traditions expressions of love, honor, and protection for one another, or have they become mere human customs that serve to restrict or exert control?
