Who have we neglected in our family, just because it is easier that way?

Israel in Jesus’ day was a difficult place to be at if you were on the fringes of society. The orphans, the sick, and the disabled were often neglected and forgotten. Their disabilities were often seen as a consequence of sin. They were left on their own with little concern shown to them by society. To the Jews, it was often just easier that way. Who had the resouces to care for them when life was hard enough as it is?

Therefore, Jesus’ ministry and example was radical. He actively reached out to the disabled and sick. Many of His miracles invovled healing as we read in this Sunday’s Gospel. He loved them as who they were and was undisturbed by their condition.

Is there anyone in your family whom you would describe as the “black sheep”? Perhaps it’s an aunty who is difficult to speak to, or a son whom you have labelled as “rebellious”? Jesus calls us to follow in His example and to show them compassion and care. They may not be physically sick, but we can all use more love in our lives. Let us ask God for the grace to accept them as they are and bring healing to their lives.
